mGinger, adMAD.Mobi, Sms2India are they worth a try?

India has become one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world since its commercial launch in August 1995. The only countries with more mobile phones than India with 156.31 million mobile phones are China-408 million and USA-170 million. Indian mobile phone market is expected to touch 348 million by 2010. With such high penetration and knowing the fact that one can't avoid an SMS received, people have found ways to monetize from this medium i.e. mobile advertisement.

In India few names that pay to read SMS ads are, mGinger, Sms2India, adMAD.mobi, mGarlic. Here is a comparison between them:-

But, what about the conversion ratio? How many people respond to these ads? Some even do not read the full message. Ginger, Garlic .etc. are all there, missing is a pinch of salt. So advertisers can do the following:-
  1. Include a phone number which is dialed by the user to authenticate an ad.
  2. An url (shortened by tinyurl, since sms has limitation of characters) can also be provided, which is visited to make a valid ad response.
  3. Ads can be sent as flash message, as they support blinking characters and the message is not saved to inbox automatically.
  4. Provide Ads in regional languages.
mGinger has launched a portal for advertisers called as AdGinger. The proposals for advertisers can be obtained by sending sales request at, http://www.mginger.com/sales.html or http://www.adginger.com/sales.html

With value added services (VAS) market within the mobile industry in India has the potential to grow from $500 million in 2006 to a whopping $10 billion by 2009, mobile advertisers have a good opportunity. But, users do not expect easy money by just reading sms ads.

How to translate your blog in different languages?

Finally, I've coded a language translation tool for new blogger that translates a blog post page to different languages using Google Language Tool.

The unique features of this translation tool are,
a) It can switch between different languages on the current page i.e. without opening a new window for each language.
b) No outbound link for translation.

Source Code and Instruction for the same are as follows:-

Step 1: Goto Template -> Edit HTML tab and select 'Expand Widget Templates'.

Step 2: Find <div class="post-body">

Step 3: Add the translation code between

<div class="post-body">
and
<p><data:post.body/></p>

Step 4: Save the template.

Though machine translation may not be accurate, still it is quite handy to let readers read your blog in different languages.

Update: Read the latest development.

Nivio Sending Spams

Nivio, a group of Indian programmers was recently in news for announcing the world’s first Windows-based online desktop called “Nivio” in Delhi. I too registered for the service, and got a reply "to wait in the queue" today evening.
But since then, I am getting spams i.e. whoever is replying to that mail is being broadcast to all registered users.
This may be due to mistake of Nivio administrator. To get rid of these messages temporarily simply create filter with condition 'to:nivio.com' and set it to skip inbox, apply a label (created prior to it) or delete it. But, if the Nivio team is doing this knowingly we can mark this message as 'Report Spam' in Gmail.

India's Top Colleges - Rank List

Well, its admission time for different courses in various colleges in India, and so is for newsmagazines to revive their marketting strategies to increase their circulation and subscription by publishing top colleges ranking. But, sometimes instead of guiding, these rankings confuse an admission-seeker.

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore has been ranked 14th by India Today's June 4, 2007 issue. This time the list comprises of top 25 colleges, while till last year it used to publish top 10 colleges only (June 5, 2006 issue). I was wondering on BITS Pilani, NIT Surathkal .etc. being not listed.

Similarly, June 11, 2007 issue of Outlook has ranked VIT 7th among top 50 private engineering colleges. While, last year it was ranked 43rd among top 100 colleges (June 17, 2006 issue).

Update 4 July, 2007:
Another survey done by DATAQUEST lists 117 top T-Schools in India (June 22, 2007 Issue), where VIT didn't find any place.
Also check out June 27, 2006 issue for previous year's ranking where they listed only top 20 colleges.

Update 10 July, 2007:
Refund fee if student leaves college: UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has warned of action against universities and colleges that are admitting students to various programmes of studies long before the actual starting of academic session, collecting full fee from the admitted students and retaining their original certificates.

Kailash Kher: Kailasa Jhoomo Re

After huge success of album 'Kailasa' last year, band Kailasa which comprises of Kailash Kher along with Paresh Kamath and Naresh Kamath is back with latest release 'Kailasa Jhoomo Re'. The album contains 9 tracks that convey different emotions and melodies. One song, Tu Meri Jaan Hai is a repeat from album Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, a daily soap on Sony Entertainment Television.

Here is a detailed music review of Kailasa Jhoomo Re.
When I tried to listen it online at musicindiaonline it showed some error message :-

But, it seems there is some loophole in the server, as it allowed downloading of tracks because the actual location of the file became visible. Both real media and mp3 version can be downloaded just by replacing the extension .rm and .mp3 respectievely.
